FAQ’s
What is in Medical Marijuana?
Medical Marijuana products contain both THC and CBD, which have various therapeutic benefits. THC is responsible for the psychoactive effects. CBD can inhibit THC’s psychoactive effects, minimizing unwanted THC side effects.
Products will list strengths of both THC and CBD to enable accurate dosing and also potential allergens and other ingredients used in the manufacturing process.
What Conditions Are Treatable With Medical Marijuana?
Physicians can recommend medical marijuana to any patient, for any condition they diagnose as debilitating to the patient.
How to Become a Medical Marijuana Patient?
- Have a condition a physician diagnoses as debilitating.
- Get an evaluation and recommendation from a physician.
- Patients will need to have their recommendation FAXED by a prescriber directly to The Apothecary Shoppe. Handwritten hard copies, telephone orders, or e-scripts will NOT be accepted.
*If your treating physician is currently not recommending medical marijuana, contact The Apothecary Shoppe to discuss your options.
The Apothecary Shoppe holds a license from the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy to dispense medical marijuana to qualified patients.
How To Find a Doctor?
Any physician who is willing, and in good standing by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners, may recommend medical marijuana to their patients.
Which Dosage Forms of Medical Marijuana are Allowed?
The legal forms of medical marijuana in Louisiana, approved by the legislature, are oils, extracts, tinctures, sprays, capsules, pills, solutions, suspension, gelatin-based chewables, lotions, transdermal patches, suppositories, and metered dose inhalation. Click here to view more information.

How Much Does Medical Marijuana Cost and is it Covered By My Insurance?
Medical marijuana is not covered by insurance. Costs can vary depending on your recommendation, strength, and dosage form. For specific cost information you should contact the pharmacy.
Does Health Insurance Cover Medical Marijuana Products if Recommended by a Doctor?
Even though a majority of states including Louisiana have legalized the use of marijuana in medical treatments, patients will have to pay for medical marijuana products out of pocket at a licensed pharmacy due to the Schedule 1 controlled substance classification of marijuana.
Can a Health Savings or Flexible Spend Account Fund the Purchase of Medical Marijuana Products?
Medical marijuana has been found to provide relief against a variety of medical conditions such as nausea, chronic pain, and muscle stiffness. However, marijuana is a Schedule 1 controlled substance, so the cost of medical marijuana products are ineligible for reimbursement under a Health Savings or Flexible Spend Account.
Does Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan Cover the Cost of Medical Marijuana Products?
Medication must have FDA approval for coverage under Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans. Since marijuana is a Schedule 1 controlled substance, patients will have to pay out of pocket for the products.
